Update on NEU Industrial Action

Dear parents and carers,

I am writing with an update on the NEU’s industrial action.

As you know, the proposed strike action for today was suspended. This was because the NEU had proposed to us as a governing body that the process for Swanshurst to become an academy be put on hold until January 2026. This, the NEU suggested, was to allow time for greater clarity on the new Government’s position on academies.

Last night we met as a governing body to give this proposal full consideration. After a lengthy meeting, we concluded unanimously that we cannot accept this new proposal as we do not believe it is in the best interests of our school community.

The original decision to become an academy and to be part of the founding group of schools to establish a new academy trust (WMAT) was made after extensive consultation and deliberation. Our view, as governors who are charged with setting the strategic direction of the school, which we do to protect the best interests of our students and staff, is that taking this decision now to join a trust where we can set the direction, culture and ethos is far more beneficial than waiting for a year to see where the government might dictate we have to be.

As such, our decision to become an academy and to form WMAT stands. The next step is for a consultation with staff about their roles transferring to the new academy trust to begin – this will start on Monday 23 September. As part of this process, we will continue to reiterate our confirmation that staff terms and conditions will be protected once Swanshurst becomes an academy.

Finally, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for all for your patience and understanding throughout this process. I recognise that you have received a number of letters from us over the recent period, and we share the frustration that many of you are, I know, feeling. We strongly believe that it is important we keep you updated on developments, so that you hear directly from us the facts about what is happening, and how Mr Dunn and his team continue to be focused on ensuring your child gets the very best education during their time with us.

I would also like to put on record the governing body’s thanks to our staff for all their hard work throughout what has been a challenging time. Under Mr Dunn’s leadership, it is their efforts and commitment, day in day out, that make Swanshurst such a special place.

Yours sincerely,

Philip Thickett
Chair of Governors
