Our Year 11 students recently took part in a specialist Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI) enrichment day, designed to stretch and challenge students as they prepare for their GCSE examinations. The day was carefully planned and delivered by the MEI team, and we are grateful to the staff for providing such a valuable learning experience.

Challenging and Supporting Young Mathematicians

Throughout the day, students worked on high?level mathematical problems that encouraged deep thinking, perseverance and independent learning. The focus was not only on finding correct answers, but on explaining methods, testing ideas, and learning from mistakes.

It was inspiring to see how confidently our students approached unfamiliar and challenging topics. They showed determination when problems were difficult and were not afraid to ask questions or seek clarification. This balance of independence and curiosity is an essential skill for success in mathematics and beyond.

In some cases, students even identified and corrected small errors in example solutions provided by the MEI lecturers. This showed a strong level of mathematical reasoning and confidence, and highlighted how engaged they were with the learning.

Tackling Complex Maths Topics with Confidence

During the enrichment sessions, students explored topics that many learners find challenging, including vectors and tangents to circles. These areas of mathematics can sometimes feel overwhelming, but our Year 11s demonstrated focus, resilience and a clear willingness to engage.

The high level of participation throughout the day reflected our students’ positive attitude towards learning maths. They listened carefully, shared ideas, checked their understanding and supported one another when solving problems.

A Valuable Experience Ahead of Exams

The MEI maths day was a rewarding and motivating experience, especially as students move towards an important and challenging exam period. Many left the sessions feeling more confident in their abilities and more prepared to face difficult exam questions.

We would like to thank the MEI team once again for delivering such an engaging and thought?provoking programme. Opportunities like this play an important role in building confidence, resilience and enjoyment in mathematics.
